Javier Bardem He has been the winner of the 2022 Goya Award for best leading actor for his wonderful work in ‘the good boss‘, the business satire of Fernando Leon de Aranoa which managed, from its collection of nominations, to hog much of the awards season’s attention.
“To Penelope, the woman I love, respect, admire and celebrate every day. I love you very much,” the actor highlighted on stage. “To our children, Leonardo and Luna, the greatest gift, the most beautiful thing that has happened in our lives. Mom and dad love you. And I dedicate it to a woman who gave birth to me, helped me live and survive, taught me the love for acting and respect for acting. She was one of the best human beings I have ever met, my mother, my beloved mother, Pilar Bardem.”
It was two years ago, at the San Sebastián Festival, accompanying the Bardem-Cruz couple in the tribute to the actress, winner of the Donostia, when León de Aranoa officially proposed the character and passed the script to its protagonist. “I was interested in the idea of the microcosm, of a remote place, a factory on the outskirts, to tell a universal story and that the viewer could feel identified with one or another character,” recalls the filmmaker. “As in ‘Mondays in the Sun’, where Santa (Bardem) was the backbone of the group, the same thing happens here, the boss weaves together all the plots, although in a more perverse way”.
“In this version of ‘It’s not a country for workers’, this good boss, Javier Bardem at the peak of his acting career, is the perfect actor to embody him”, pointed out Carlos Loureda in his review from San Sebastian. “If in that one he used any pistol, knife, glass, bat… within his reach, in this one the weapons are different, the false arguments, the cynical interest, the good words, but the result is the same: destruction, and exposed in a brilliantly, even to death.”
Since his nomination for ‘Ham Ham‘ (Bigas Luna, 1992), Bardem has opted for the bobblehead twelve times, this being the seventh he has taken home. To the first, as best supporting actor for ‘numbered days‘ (Imanol Uribe, 1994), followed by the five for best leading actor for ‘mouth to mouth‘ (Manuel Gomez Pereira, 1995), ‘Mondays in the sun‘ (Fernando León de Aranoa, 2002), ‘out to sea‘ (Alejandro Amenábar, 2004), ‘Biutiful’ (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2010) and the current one by ‘the good boss‘, without forgetting the collected as producer of ‘Children of the clouds, the last colony‘ (Álvaro Longoria, 2012) for best documentary film.
Along with him, it is worth highlighting the lofty list of nominees in which we find Javier Gutierrez for ‘The daughter‘ (Manuel Martin Cuenca, 2021), louis tosar for ‘maixabel‘ (Icíar Bollaín, 2021) and Edward Fernandez for ‘Mediterranean‘ (Marcel Barrena, 2021).
