This summer a duel of the titans (or dragons) is coming. ‘The House of the Dragon’, prequel to ‘Game of Thrones’, and ‘The Rings of Power’, prequel to ‘The Lord of the Rings’, They will premiere later this summer on HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video, respectively.
George RR Martin, author of the ‘Game of Thrones’ books has spoken in an interview at the Santa Fé Literary Festival (via indiewire) about the rivalry that has been generated between the two spin-offs. “I know a lot of articles, at the time the dates were announced, were like, ‘Oh, the battle for fantasy supremacy. It’s ‘Rings of Power’ vs. ‘House of the Dragon,’ who’s going to win? No I know why they always have to do that”. However, the writer has shown great confidence regarding the results he expected to obtain with ‘The house of the dragon’. “I hope both series are successful. I’m pretty competitive. I hope we have more success. If they win six Emmys, and I hope they do, I hope we win seven,” Martin said.
The new addition to the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe will take place 200 years before the original series and its story will revolve around the conflicts that arose around the house of the Targaryens, where Princess Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) comes from, and the civil war that will arise from these tensions. The cast will be led by Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans. The showrunners are the writer and producer Ryan J. Condal and Londoner Miguel Sapochnik, from the original series, who also serves as director on the new HBO spin-off.
‘The Rings of Power’, on the other hand, It will take place around the Second Age of Middle-earth, with the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron to power. With JD Payne and Patrick McKay as showrunners, the series will also tell how the rings of power were forged, the history of the island of Númenor and the War of the Last Alliance between Elves and Men. The cast of interpreters will be formed in this case by Charles Edwards, Will Fletcher, Amelie Child-Villiers and Beau Cassidy.
From love to hate
Something to keep in mind for the premiere of ‘The House of the Dragon’ is undoubtedly the feeling that the end of ‘Game of Thrones’ left in the public. The eighth season was the one that put the finishing touch to the HBO series, although it caused very different reactions. Although it was not a unanimous feeling, it did cause a resounding disappointment among the fans, something that the new installment will try to leave in the past.
However, the author of the ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ series of novels has also given his opinion in this regard and says that he does not understand the outrage of the fans. “The truth is, I don’t understand. (…) I don’t understand how people can come to hate something they used to love so much. If you don’t like a series, don’t watch it. How has everything become so toxic?the author told The Independent (via ScreenRant).
The HBO series will premiere on the platform on August 21 and Amazon’s September 2.
