'Hercules'

On June 18 we finally found out who would be in charge of the real-action remake of ‘Hercules’, the Disney animated classic. It is none other than Guy Ritchie (‘Sherlock Holmes’, ‘Snatch. Pigs and diamonds’), a filmmaker who was already in charge of doing the same with ‘Aladdin’whose premiere in 2019 was a huge success at the box office, positioning itself only behind ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in terms of live-actions.

At the moment, the only names that are associated with the project are all behind the scenes. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo (‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’) will be the producers and Dave Callaham (‘Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings’) has been in charge of a first draft of the script. Although it is still early to talk about the cast, the networks have begun to bombard them with their suggestions for the main rolesespecially, of course, that of Hercules.

The actors chosen by fans to play the role of the son of Zeus are very diverse. From Taron Egerton to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, going through a quite muscular Daniel Radcliffe (also rumored for Wolverine) or a safe bet like Henry Cavill and his very strong Superman. Although for strong Will Poulter, who will play Adam Warlock in the next ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and who also sounds to star in Hercules. One of the latest names to join the list is that of actor Zane Phillips (‘Fire Island’), who after many mentions, has volunteered to play the demigod, which shows how requested and mediatic this role will become in the next few months.

Beyond Hercules

Of course, the demigod isn’t the only mythical character in the 1997 film. The villain Hades, known for being one of Disney’s best, is also on everyone’s lips on the hunt for a charismatic actor who can embody the god of the Underworld. Among others, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Grant or Bruce Campbell, who has even supported this fan cast through their social networks.

As for the role of Megara, a name that has been gaining a lot of strength in recent years is that of Ariana Grande. after his brief but celebrated cameo in ‘Don’t look up’. The singer already “performed” the character by covering Megara’s ‘I Won’t Say I’m in Love’ for the Disney Family Singalong, the company’s television special during the pandemic. Even so, the Internet shuffles other names such as Elizabeth Gillies or Melissa Barrera.

In the case of Philoctetes, fans do not contemplate another option other than Danny DeVito due to his physical resemblance and that the actor already gave him a voice in the original film. Other characters that one could fantasize about are Pain and Panic, Zeus or even The Muses, for which musical stars like BeyoncĂ© or Lizzo sound; but what is clear is that Disney will have to choose its cast carefully since ‘Hercules’ is one of the most beloved and respected films of the golden age of Disney. The project does not yet have a scheduled release date.
