Humanity is one miscalculation away from "nuclear annihilation": António Guterres

humanity is at a single miscalculation of nuclear annihilationas it faces a threat not seen since the Cold Warsaid the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres.

The elimination of nuclear weapons is the only guarantee that they will never be used, he stressed.

During the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the head of the organization reported that there are almost 13 thousand weapons of this type in the world.

“We have been extraordinarily lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy. Nor is it a shield against geopolitical tensions that lead to a nuclear conflict. Today, humanity is just one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation,” he declared.

He stressed that geopolitical tensions are reaching new highs, “competition is overtaking cooperation and collaboration” and mistrust has replaced dialogue, while disunity has replaced disarmament.

He also pointed out that the countries spend “hundreds of billions of dollars into doomsday weapons that have no place on our planet.”

Given this, he recommended reinforcing and reaffirming the norm against the use of nuclear weapons, to find measures that will reduce the risk of nuclear war and put the disarm.

Likewise, they must reduce nuclear weapons, in order to eliminate them, address the “latent tensions in the Middle East and Asia“, promote the peaceful use of nuclear technology and fulfill the commitments of the Treaty.

“Humanity is in danger of forgetting the lessons forged in the terrifying fires of Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” he added.

The Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons takes place from August 1 to 26, 2022.
