Taiwan put planes into the air on Wednesday to Repel 27 Chinese fighters in their air defense zoneaccording to the island’s Defense Ministry, which added that 22 of them crossed the dividing line that separates the island from China amid growing tension.

China showed its outrage at the United States’ highest-level visit to the island in 25 years with the arrival in the region of The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and carried out a series of military exercises around Taiwan, while summoning the US ambassador to Beijing and halting various agricultural imports from the island.

Taiwan said it had sent planes and deployed missile systems to “monitor” Chinese activities in its air defense identification zone, or ADIZ, in the latest uptick in hostility in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has complained in recent years of repeated Chinese air force missions near the democratically-ruled island, often in the southwestern part of ADIZ.

The latest Chinese mission included 16 Chinese Su-30 fighters and 11 other aircraftaccording to the Taiwan Ministry of Defense.

A source familiar with Taiwan’s security plans told Reuters that the 22 planes that crossed the dividing line did not go too far into the unofficial buffer zone on the Chinese side. Neither side usually crosses the dividing line with their combat ships.

Taiwan said on Wednesday that some of China’s military exercises this week were to take place within Taiwan’s 12-nautical-mile sea and air territory, an unprecedented move that a senior defense official described as “equivalent to a sea and air blockade of Taiwan.”
