China halts high-level military dialogue with the US after Pelosi's visit to Taiwan

Beijing announced this Friday the interruption of its cooperation with the United States in a series of areas, including dialogue between high-level military commandersin retaliation for the visit to Taiwan this week by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

China’s Foreign Ministry also said in a statement that it was halting climate talks with the United States, as well as the cooperation in the prevention of cross-border crime and in the repatriation of irregular immigrants, among eight other specific measures.

In a statement released shortly after Pelosi left Japan on the final leg of her Asian tour, China also canceled a bilateral meeting planned on a maritime military security mechanism.

Beijing separately announced that I would personally sanction Pelosi and her immediate family in response to his “ruthless” and “provocative” actions.

“Despite serious concerns and strong opposition from China, Pelosi insisted on visiting Taiwanseriously interfering in China’s internal affairs, undermining China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, trampling on the one-China policy and threatening the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait“, detailed the spokesman for the ministry in a statement.

Pelosi’s brief visit this week to self-governing Taiwan, which China claims as its own, angered Beijing and triggered Chinese military exercises on an unprecedented scale in the seas and air around the island.
