International Beer Day | Do beers really quench thirst? Here we tell you

Obviously, in On hotter days, fluid intake increases. According to experts, it is advisable to drink non-carbonated liquids in small doses, but more frequently. How many? At least half a liter more, but above all in this one must be guided by thirst.

This is how he explains it, Dr. José Manuel Fernández García, coordinator of the Nutrition Group of the Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians (SEMERGEN), explained how should our hydration be on the hottest daysnow that heat waves are frequent in summer.

In this regard, remember that the most important thing to know about hydration is that the recommended amount of fluids consumed per day should be between 4 and 6 glasses of 200 milliliters a day, what has been about a liter or a liter and a half daily.

Drinking more than 3 liters is counterproductive because it produces a volume overload that in people suffering from kidney or heart disease can lead to respiratory symptoms and kidney changes, “he warns.

How to know the ideal amount to drink?

Fernández stresses in this sense that this amount is what the own body needs each daysomething that will depend not only on the amount of fluids ingested, but also on the losses that occur through urine, feces, sweating, or breathing, for example.

“Therefore, although it is difficult to know what the ideal amount of liquid is, it is true that you should consume around a liter or a liter and a half daily. In this sense, thirst is a good mechanism to regulate the ideal amount of liquids that should be ingested, since in a very complex way at the brain level it allows the body to drink what it needs to maintain correct internal regulation, ”he adds. .

However, the SEMERGEN expert asks that certain people be cautious in this regard, such as the elderly, since they may have an altered thirst mechanism, so he sees it as important to monitor their fluid intake.

“Not only in the elderly, but also in pregnant women because of their greater fluid needs in this situation, or in children who are more reluctant to drink. These population groups must be the ones who must monitor an adequate intake the most, to avoid dehydration, and offer liquids frequently in small doses, ”adds the specialist.

What about beer?

In summer we like to drink beer because it refreshes usbut the SEMERGEN expert points out that, although used to quench thirstsupposes a calorie intake that is not adequate.

“The consumption of low-proof fermented beverages, such as beer or wine in moderate amounts, is accepted because it does not worsen the cardiovascular profile but within a Mediterranean diet profile. It is not a question of promoting their consumption, and they are not good options to quench thirst”.

Fernández points out that they must On hot days, avoid hot drinks, alcoholic beverages, especially high alcohol content, and carbonated drinks are not recommended either.

“With heat, water. In this sense, we must not forget that solid foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are an excellent source of water, but also fiber, minerals and vitamins essential to follow a healthy and balanced diet, and that help to replenish the electrolytes that are lost in hot weather”, says the specialist.
