Actress and singer Olivia Newton-John, 73, passed away on Monday after years of battling breast cancer.
He was a great international star of Hollywood cinema. She achieved worldwide fame after starring grease (Vaseline), as Sandy, alongside John Travolta.
The 1978 film wowed critics and audiences alike, and its soundtrack spawned a string of smash hits as a duet with Travolta.
Alone, one of the most remembered pieces is “Hopelessly Devoted to You”:
Guess mine is not the first heart broken
My eyes are not the first to cry
I’m not the first to know
There’s just no getting over you
The artist began acting as a child and became a global superstar after moving to the United States. She had her first hit in 1971 with “If Not for You,” a Bob Dylan song that George Harrison had also recorded.
It would be followed in the following years by “Let Me Be There”, which earned her a Grammy for best female country vocal performance, “If You Love Me (Let Me Know)” and two number 1s, “Have You Never Been Mellow”. and “I Honestly Love You.” The latter song won the Grammys for Best Female Pop Performance and Record of the Year.
Newton-John also beat out country stars Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton to win the Country Music Association’s Female Singer of the Year award in 1974. The unlikely success of an Australian upset many Nashville purists.
His critics also disliked Newton-John’s work, often finding it too commercial. The New York Times once described his voice as “almost colorless.”
During the 1980s he pursued a solo musical career, where he achieved the first places with “Physical”, where he left aside the sweet aura that he had during the first part of his career.
Other relevant roles in the cinema were her interpretation of Kira in “Xanadú” and Debbie in “Tal para cual” (where she coincided again with Travolta).
