‘John Wick’ has not put the brakes on, but he is taking things easy. This saga has a fourth installment on the horizon, film that will be joined by a film spin-off starring Ana de Armas and another in the form of a series, ‘The Continental’; but he has not yet got down to work with ‘John Wick 5’. The pandemic was responsible for putting the brakes on this production, which for the moment has not resumed its path.
Before COVID-19 forced studios to change their plans, ‘John Wick’ was going to shoot its fourth and fifth installments simultaneously, an option that Lionsgate chose to rule out in light of a new paradigm that has pushed the industry towards a more cautious approach adjusted to uncertainty. So ‘John Wick 5’ had been left in a limbo that now clarifies Chad Stahelski, director of the saga still surprised by his success.
“[Ahora mismo] the studio’s intention is to continue the franchise. But I’m not one of those directors and producers who approach it in a ‘yes’ way. I don’t know. I guess I’ll do five’, nor am I going to take it for granted. I still think the first ‘John Wick’ movie was dumb. We made it as a little action proposal, something fun that we would like to see. And now, nine years later, it has changed our lives. I change my life. Changed Keanu’s life [Reeves]. It has changed the lives of many other people. And the fans still want to see more.”Stahelski says in statements to Collider.
there is desire
Stahelski prefers to show himself content but he can’t hide his desire to start proposing a new installment of the saga. Hence, he is already thinking about sinking his teeth into ‘John Wick 5’ as he always does: hand in hand with its star, Keanu Reeves, and “a few glasses of Yamazaki or Hibiki”.
“I have no doubt that a year from now we’ll start to think it’s time to light a new fuse. Every installment of Wick has been written or at least we’ve come up with his concept in Japan, at the Imperial Hotel, with me and Keanu in full press tour. It starts with a few glasses of Yamazaki or Hibiki and next thing we’re like ‘I didn’t know we could do this’. That’s how we started to develop each script”. In March of next year, ‘John Wick 4’ is released. Hopefully those Yamazaki glasses are full of inspiration.
