Hadhi Matarthe suspect in attacking novelist Salman Rushdie on Friday, was charged with attempted murder and assaultreported the US prosecutor’s office this Saturday.
“The person responsible for yesterday’s attack, Hadi Matar, has now been formally charged with attempted second degree murder and assault in the second degree,” said Jason Schmidt, district attorney for Chautauqua County in New York.
He added that Mattar, 24, was processed on these charges overnight Friday and is currently in custody. pre-trial detention without bail.

Matar is originally Lebanese and his family comes from the city of Yaroun, in southern Lebanon, he told Reuters Yaroun Mayor Ali Tehfe.
An official of Lebanese armed group Hezbollah The Iranian-backed group said on Saturday the group had no additional information about the stabbing of novelist Salman Rushdie.
“We don’t know anything about this issue, so we won’t comment.” the official told Reutersspeaking on condition of anonymity.
Hezbollah is backed by Iran, whose former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa, or religious edict, in 1988, calling on Muslims to kill Rushdie for blasphemy.
