Minors who play more than 10 hours of video games show signs of anxiety: UNAM

Minors practicing video game 10 hours or more, show signs of anxiety and they face conflicts with their parents, revealed an investigation carried out by Mariana Viruega Muñoz, a graduate of the Faculty of Psychology (FP) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The study also shows that, due to the confinement due to the pandemic of the Covid-19the number of people who dedicated a large part of the day to this activity increased by more than five percent.

The research for the master’s thesis was carried out post-pandemic with the participation of parents of adolescents from 12 to 17 years of age who present the characteristic of excessive use of electronic games.

“In recent years there has been a significant change in the way of playing, since there is a greater preference for interactive games found on electronic devices, rather than for other types of games.recreational activitiessports, cultural or socio-family”, warned the university student during a conference.

He added that since 2018 the World Health Organization he already mentions video game use disorder, he refers to it as a persistent and recurrent use that causes significant deterioration and discomfort.

Among the recommendations made by Viruega Muñoz are increase coexistence With the adolescent, allow periods of pause from the activity that was avoided, show how to perform the expected behavior and give positive attention through praise for behaviors such as washing dishes, connecting to their classes, etc.

“Knowing the functions of video game behavior allowed us to choose more effective intervention strategies. It should be noted that the teenagers they did not stop playing video games, what they did was play in regulated periods of time”, he highlighted, as part of the study’s conclusions.
