In June 2020, it was announced that Disney was working on a new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ installment with Margot Robbie set to star and produce. In the midst of the legal battle between Johnny Depp, who played Jack Sparrow in the saga, and Amber Heard, the studio considered the possibilities of continuing the franchise without the actor, and a possible solution was this spin-off with a female lead. In May of this year, after a long time without news, the producer of the successful property, Jerry Bruckheimer, confirmed that the project was still in progress, but now, Robbie has revealed that Disney no longer has it in development.
It has been in an in-depth interview for Vanity Fair, where the popular Australian actress has confirmed that the film is no longer in Disney’s plans, further implying that the decision was made long ago. In her words: “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to do a female-led story, well, not totally, but a different story, which we thought could have been great, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”.
Robbie’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ wouldn’t exactly have been a reboot, but would have supposedly existed in the same universe as the movies starring Depp. Christina Hodson, who already worked with Robbie on ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ and wrote ‘Bumblebee’, would have been in charge of the script, according to rumors. The idea was to expand the saga beyond Jack Sparrow, but in the end, Disney has chosen not to follow that path. The question now is whether the studio is considering a possible Depp return to the franchise. And it is that, despite the fact that the controversial actor expressed during his media trial that he is not interested, the rumors about a possible reconciliation with the Mouse House have been insistent, especially after the verdict was decided in his favor .
