The International Swimming Federation (FINA), meeting at an extraordinary congress in Melbourne, Australia, decided on Monday to change its name and become World Aquatics.
Since its creation in 1908 the International Federation had the name of FINA, the initials of its name in French (Fédération Internationale de Natation).
the kuwaiti Husayn al-Musallampresident of the organization, justified this decision, by declaring that all the disciplines covered by the Federation must be brought together “under a single brand,” and added.
We need a name that reflects the entire FINA family, a name that can be proudly worn by our swimmers, artistic swimmers, divers, divers, open water swimmers and water polo players.
Adam Peatyworld champion and Olympic gold medalist, was one of the many stars of aquatic sports that was present at the Melbourne congress.
Members of the now exFINA also voted to create a Independent Aquatic Integrity Unitwhich will enter into force on January 1.
