'No news at the front'

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has already announced its shortlist for the BAFTA Awards, the British equivalent of the Spanish Goyas and the North American Oscars. The gala will be held on February 19 at the Royal Festival Hall in the British capital. Despite the fact that many of the nominations were predictable, there is more than one surprise among the 45 recognized films.

In the list of candidates there is a Netflix feature film that is repeated 14 times: ‘All Quiet on the Front’, the German anti-war drama that has broken the record for foreign films in the history of the BAFTAs. It is followed by ‘Elvis’, with nine nominations, where the name of Austin Butler could not be missing in his iconic representation of the king of rock and roll, and then comes ‘Tár’ with five, where Cate Blanchett plays a prestigious and complex director of orchestra; both are among the favorites to win the prestigious golden mask, which would accompany their Golden Globes.

The scarcity of some large productions is surprising: ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ has only two nominations, while ‘Los Fabelmans’ is only in the category for best screenplay. Besides, The name of Felix Kammerer, the leading actor who holds the weight of the most nominated film, does not appear, while it is the first time that the Irishman Colin Farrell has been nominated by the academy. This year Spain does not have a presence in any of the categories, although we do find Spanish-language films such as ‘Argentina, 1985’, which has achieved great success globally and is competing for best non-English-language film with the German film ‘Sin novelty on the front’, the international co-production ‘The Rebel Empress’, the Korean ‘Decision to Leave’ and the Irish ‘The Quiet Girl’.
