Mexico received 20.6 million international tourists by air during 2022, showing a recovery after the pandemic, registering an improvement compared to the previous two years, reported the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).
According to figures from the Migration Policy-Registry and Identity Unit of the Ministry of the Interior, the number of internationals by air 46.3% exceeded what was observed in 2021.
Likewise, it was higher by 8.2% to the number that entered the country through the same route in 2019, when 19.4 million international visitors were registered in Mexico.
The Sectur indicated that a third of these international travelers arrived in the country from the United States, Canada and Colombia, adding a total of 15.6 million.
This represented an increase of 39.5% compared to the 2021 figure. and an increase of 16.4% compared to the 13.4 million tourists in 2019.
The head of the Sectur, Miguel Torruco, explained that, Only from the United States, 13 million tourists enteredwhich is 27% more compared to 2021 and 23.7% higher than in 2019.
From Canada, Torruco indicated the arrival of 1.8 million tourists, 249.4% more than in 2021 and 23.8% below what was registered in 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the case of Colombians, the entry of 854,840 tourists was reported, surpassing the 2021 figure by 88.8% and in 42.5% that of 2019.
Of the rest of nationalities, there were 4.98 million tourists, an increase of 72.7% compared to 2021, and representing a market share of 24.2%.
The Mexican official also informed that the airports of Cancun, the International Airport of Mexico City (AICM) and Los Cabos, were those that received the largest number of international tourists.
At these airports 15.87 million tourists were received, 46.5% higher than 2021 and 8.2% higher than 2019 arrivals.
The Cancun airport was the one that received the most international visitors during 2022 with the arrival of 9.5 million international tourists, 47.7% more than in 2021.
