Cárdenas distances himself from Punto De Partida, after AMLO’s signaling

The engineer Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas distanced himself from the initiative Pointafter President López Obrador pointed out that he would be an “adversary” if he participated in the new movement.

In a statement, the historical leader of leftist movements said that he separated from Point during the formulation of the principle formulation document.

I consider it necessary, in the face of wrong versions and speculation in different media regarding my absence from the meeting called under the name Punto de partida, held yesterday, to make the following considerations:

I firmly believe that the debate strengthens our democratic life, that in order to solve the main problems of the country: insecurity and violence, economic backwardness, social inequality, the excessive concentration of wealth, the risks of climate change, etc., There is a lack of a broad discussion of ideas and that the more options there are, the more coincidences between the alternatives presented by the different sectors of our country -including the government-, the better will be the paths that are decided to attend to the different problems.

With these ideas in mind, I have tried to encourage, within my possibilities, the elaboration of different proposals. However, in the particular case of Punto de partida, whose development as a document I have been aware of over time, at no time have I been the convener of anyone to participate in its formulation and subsequent development.

At the time, I informed those who invited me to learn about this project and follow up on its development process, that based on political considerations, I would no longer participate.

These are the reasons for my absence at the ceremony held yesterday to publicize the Punto de partida project.

During the morning conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that he would consider Cárdenas an “adversary” if he “assumes a position of this type.”

I appreciate it very much, I respect it, I consider it a precursor of this movement, but we are living in a moment of definitions and this width is very narrow, there is nowhere to go.

The President reiterated his speech that it is time for definitions and that there are two sides, those that are with the people or with the oligarchy.
