Paris mayor doesn't want Russian athletes at Olympics 'if war continues'

The mayoress of Paris, Anne Hidalgowas opposed this Tuesday frontally to Russian athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games ‘if they still the war continues’ in the Ukraine.

Hidalgo declared during an interview on public radio French Info.

As long as Russia continues with the war in Ukraine, I hope that there will not be a Russian delegation at the Paris 2024 Games (…). It would seem indecent to me that a country paraded like nothing, that they came to Paris while bombs continue to fall in Ukraine.

At the end of January, Hidalgo declared himself in favor of Russian athletes being able to participate under a neutral flag, but now reject that possibility.

the neutral flag ‘doesn’t really exist’he added. In addition, he opened the door for athletes who oppose the war in Ukraine to be part of the refugee team.

Hidalgo is placed in this way next to the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenskywhich has called for Russian athletes to be excluded and has even threatened to boycott the Games if it is not done.

The decision corresponds to International Olympic Committee (IOC) and not to the organizing country.

The mayoress of the French capital also defended the decision not to air-condition the Olympic venues, despite the high temperatures that can occur in Paris at the end of July and beginning of August, and justified it by ecological reasons.

“I very much respect the comfort of the athletes, but I think more about the survival of humanity,” said Hidalgo, who recalled that the Olympic Village will be essentially built of woodwhich will guarantee a natural air conditioning.
