Pope Francis assured this Tuesday that he is “close” to the people affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, for whom he asked that help “sustain them” in the “immense tragedy”.

“I am close, with all my heart, to the people affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. I continue to pray for those who have lost their lives, for the injured, their families and the rescue teams. May the concrete help of all of us sustain you in this immense tragedy, ”wrote the pontiff on his Twitter profile.

On Monday, hours after the tremor, Francis expressed his “deep sadness” for the “enormous losses” caused by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook southwestern Turkey at dawn and has left more than 5,000 dead in that country. and in Syria.

In a message posted on his social media, Francis entrusted “the deceased to the loving mercy of the Almighty” and prayed for all those involved in the rescue operations.

In Turkey, more than 3,500 people have been killed and 22,000 injured, while in Syria, the death toll is currently around 1,500 deaths, although it is assumed that the number of victims will increase given the thousands of buildings that have collapsed

After the catastrophe, the Member States of the European Union (EU) have already sent 1,185 rescuers to speed up the rescue efforts, since there is only a seven-day window to rescue the people who have been buried under the rubble, it said today a representative of the UN Humanitarian Aid Office.
