The sequel to the acclaimed ‘Gladiator’, starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, is in development with Ridley Scott once again directing. Although there are still not many details about the film, we do know its release date, November 22, 2024, and that centers on Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Shortly after learning that Barry Keoghan, nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for his role in ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, is in negotiations to join in the sequel, we already know another name in talks to join. as revealed Deadline, Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington is in final negotiations to sign on for ‘Gladiator 2’.
The role he will play is unknown, but the American media assures that will be important, who will co-star in the film. It wouldn’t be Washington’s first time under Ridley Scott’s orders, they worked together 16 years ago on ‘American Gangster.’
Although Keoghan and Washington are still in negotiations, we do know that Paul Mescal, nominated for best actor at the 2023 Oscars for his role in ‘Aftersun’, stars in the sequel to ‘Gladiator’ playing an already adult Lucius. Without going into details in case someone decides to see ‘Gladiator’ for the first time ahead of the premiere of its sequel, let’s remember that Máximo Decimus Meridio, Crowe’s character, made a great impression on a young Lucius, so we’ll see how this affects the plot.
Beyond the fact that it seems that the cast will be made up of high-level performers and for having Ridley Scott himself both as director and producer, expectations for ‘Gladiator 2’ are very high due to the prestige enjoyed by the first installment. In addition to continuing to be loved by the public 23 years later, ‘Gladiator’ was nominated for 12 Oscars, of which it won five: Best Picture, Best Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound.
‘Gladiator 2’ is released in theaters on November 22, 2024.
