During last year, 1 in 5 people have been discriminated against in Mexico according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
According to the results of the 2022 National Survey on Discrimination (ENADIS), the population groups with the highest prevalence of discrimination are people Afro-descendantspaid domestic workers and people with disability.
According to the survey there are prevailing prejudices. 33.9% consider that “the poor make little effort to get out of poverty.” While one in 10 people believe that “some women who are raped is because they provoke men”.
According to the Inegi, “discrimination is social rejection based on stereotypes, prejudices, stigmas and cultural values in accordance with what a society or social group considers acceptable characteristics”.

Women feel a little more discriminated against than men, 24.5% compared to 22.8% of men. However, the reason they are discriminated against is different from that of men.
The main reason why women say they feel discriminated against is because of the mere fact of being women, followed by the way they dress, by their weight and age. While the main reason for men is because of the way they dress, followed by their political opinions, way of speaking and weight.
It is observed that people with HIV or AIDS are highly discriminated against. At the national level, 47.7% of the population aged 18 and over, regardless of whether they have children or not, would not agree that their daughter or son should marry a person living with AIDS or HIV.
In addition, 14.6% of the population aged 18 and over would not agree to hire a person living with AIDS or HIV.

The indigenous population is strongly discriminated against. ENADIS 2022 estimates that 26.9% of the indigenous population aged 18 and over stated that they were denied unreasonably any of your rights in the last 5 years.

The Inegi carries out the National Survey on Discrimination with the aim of “recognize the magnitude of discrimination and its various manifestations in daily life, deepening the knowledge about who or who discriminates, in which areas of life this problem occurs most frequently and the sociocultural factors that are related to it.
