Due to its innovative force in the panorama of Hispanic letters and due to the richness of the narrative resources involved in its creation, the novel The weight of living on earthof the Mexican writer david tuscanywas the winning work at the V Mario Vargas Llosa Novel Biennial.
The novel was selected from among six finalists and highlights the work of the imagination as a tool in the face of adversity to give dignity and richness to existence and fight against the obstacles to freedom, said the writer. Soledad Alvarez, President of the Jury.
“The winning novel has created a handful of immensely moving characters, but above all, it offers its readers a deep meditation of the proud lineage of Cervantes on the power of imagination in our lives”, he explained, and mentioned that the jury’s decision was made by majority.
The award-winning writer thanked the recognition and mentioned that various writers who have dedicated their lives to literature and that it reaches more people are involved through this novel.
“This novel is born from a desire to pay tribute to so many writers who gave their lives for literature,” he stressed.
He recalled that there were cases of russian poets who were repressed, who sought to highlight the dignity of the individuals they encountered through literature.
“In many places people continue to be persecuted for what they write. If what I speak or what I write can be of any use, it is to give literature that weight that it should have in our lives”, he pointed out.
Along with Toscana, the other finalists were Mercy Bonnetwith What to do with these pieces; Cristina Rivera Garza with Liliana’s invincible summer; Brenda Navarro with ash in the mouth; Hector Abad Faciolince with Except my heart, everything is fineand Juan Tallon with Masterpiece.
For his part, Raúl Tola, director of the Mario Vargas Llosa Chair, mentioned that during the days that the V Biennial lasted, more than 30 writers from countries such as Peru, Mexico, Spain, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala participated.
