Chris Hemsworth’s latest solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, was not particularly well received by audiences, despite having grossed an impressive $760 million at the worldwide box office.
The type of humor, and the final result of the special effects used in the film, turned the public against the fourth film of the God Argardian by Hemsworth, directed by Taika Waititi.
The protagonist himself seems to be aware of this. And so he has recognized it in a recent interview, with the GQ magazinewhere he reflected on criticism from the public and about the comments that Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino they had made about the content of the MCU.
“I think we had too much fun. It turned into something a little silly,” the interpreter commented on the film. “It’s always difficult to be in the center of this and not really have any perspective… I love the process, it’s always a journey. But you never know how people are going to react.“
As the actor recognized, the worst critics always end up being his son’s friends.
“They’re a bunch of eight-year-olds criticizing my movie.. ‘We think this one had too much humor; the action was good, but the special effects weren’t that good…’,” Hemsworth commented. “I am embarrassed and laugh at the same time.“
Although at the moment the actor is not involved in any other Marvel project, he does not rule out the possibility of returning if an artistically interesting opportunity arises.
“I love the experience. I love that I was able to do quite different things throughout the process.. ‘Thor 1’ and 2 were his own story. ‘Thor 3’ and 4 were quite different… There’s also ‘The Avengers’. I think this is due to the different directors and my own need to do something different.“
On the other hand, the criticisms of reputable filmmakers were also put on the table. Scorsese had lashed out at Marvel for his “negative impact” in the exhibition of films. While Tarantino, last November, assured that the franchise was incapable of forming movie stars.
“Part of the ‘marvelization‘ of Hollywood is that you have all these actors who become famous for playing characters,” Tarantino commented in the podcast, ‘2 Bears, 1 Cave‘. “But they’re not movie stars, are they? Captain America is the star. Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first to say this. It’s the characters in the franchise that become famous.”
On these statements, Hemsworth commented: “It’s super depressing to hear that. There are two of my heroes that I won’t be able to work with. I guess they’re not my fans.”
Without letting pessimism win the battle, the interpreter was also grateful for having been part of the films. Chris Hemsworth has brought Thor to life in a total of 8 films within the superhero saga. Despite the bad reviews that the last of his solo titles received, the franchise has mobilized countless fans throughout the world during all these years.
“I am very grateful to have been a part of something that has brought people to the movies. Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of others, I don’t know.. I don’t like that we start pointing fingers at each other, at a time of such fragility in the industry and in the arts as it is now…”
“I’m not talking so much about the directors who made these comments, who are still my heroes and I would love to work with them. More about the general opinion regarding this topic. I don’t think any of us have the answer, but we are trying .”
Every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is available on streaming on Disney+.
