As explained by the NYT, Rush’s ancestors were remembered, in the past, by some survivors of the shipwreck. Some of those rescued claimed to have seen Isidor Straus refuse to board the lifeboat, because there were still women and children to board. According to these statements, her wife, Ida, decided to stay with her husband. Both were last seen standing, arm in arm, on the deck of the Titanic.
The remains of Mr. Straus were found on the surface of the Atlantic days after the tragedy. His wife, Ida, could not be located.
Mrs Rush descends from one of the daughters of the Straus marriage, Minniewho married Dr. Richard Weil in 1905. Weil’s grandson, Richard Weil III, is Wendy’s father, as confirmed by Joan Adler, CEO of the Straus Historical Society.
