Adam Wingard, who began his career in horror and will be making his action debut with GVK, has been selected to direct and co-write the remake of Face / Off.
Director Adam Wingard has been chosen to direct the Face / Off remake currently in development at Paramount. The project has been in development since 2019, but it’s understandable, as the action’s mastermind John Woo’s original is as iconic today as it was in 1997.
The original Face / Off starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta at the height of their gonzo acting prowess, playing a criminal mastermind and an FBI agent respectively, who literally switch faces. It is famous that the pair filmed the end of the movie first, without having reference images of how they would interpret their own characters before canonically changing faces. The result was one of the craziest movies ever made, and Face / Off It has remained in the action movie hall of fame ever since. The question has always been which two actors could replace Cage and Travolta, with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as recent favorites, but first Paramount has chosen its director, perhaps impressed with his work on the next film. Godzilla vs. Kong.

THR reported that Adam Wingard will lead the Face / Off remake, and will apparently start a new script with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. A script had previously been produced by 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel, but it is not yet known if that draft now bears any relation to Wingard and Barrett’s version.
Adam Wingard is an interesting choice, as he has primarily been a creator of horror. He has also held various jobs throughout his career, as a writer, editor, and even composer on various projects that he also directed. Godzilla vs. Kong It will be his first live action movie, but he must have done a good job to be chosen to fill John Woo’s boots. Looking back, Wingard’s career has been a bit mixed. Beginning in the horror scene mumblegore, he found commercial and critical success with You are next Y The guest, and then ran that momentum directly against a wall with the disappointing witch and the poorly received live adaptation of Death Note. It will be interesting to see where a duo generally focused on horror leads. Face / Off, an inherently disturbing concept that leaves room for decent body horror.
We’ve seen horror directors do surprisingly excellent work on action movies recently, with David F. Sandberg Shazam! being a good example. What will be much more interesting is seeing who Wingard chooses to be his stars. The legacy of Face / Off it is one of the absolutely crazy decisions, both in his images and, of course, in his performances. It’s hard to imagine that a remake of the film would manage to recreate that energy, especially far removed from the gonzo action scene of the 90s. Perhaps Adam Wingard was explicitly chosen to take the project in a whole new direction.
TO UPDATE: Director Adam Wingard has clarified the new Face / Off it will be a direct sequel, not a remake.
