Game of Thrones creators DB Weiss and David Benioff, in association with Hugh Jackman, are set to adapt The Overstory into a Netflix series.
game of Thrones creators DB Weiss and David Benioff partner with Hugh Jackman to adapt The Overstory for Netflix. Weiss and Benioff signed a large blanket deal with Netflix in 2019. The deal was the result of a bidding war after the conclusion of Game of Thrones, with big studios like Amazon and Disney in the mix. Under the agreement, Benioff and Weiss are set to write, direct and produce multiple shows and movies under the banner “Netflix Original.”
Now through Deadline, the duo’s latest project will see them team up with Hugh Jackman for an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Overstory. It is Richard Powers’ twelfth novel and follows the lives of nine Americans and their unique relationships with various trees, while also addressing the theme of forest destruction. Jackman is hired as an executive producer, with the potential to star in the show depending on how production goes.
Although the Benioff and Weiss mandate with game of Thrones ended up in controversy, the idea of them tackling another adaptation shouldn’t be completely discounted. When they were still working on the George RR Martin novels, the show was acclaimed by both critics and publicity. The quality of game of Thrones It got noticeably worse when the duo ran out of material to fit in, so the fact that they’re working on a beloved novel The Overstory it should make people more optimistic. Jackman’s involvement is also promising, considering his strong track record in the industry. Hopefully it proves to be a fruitful team.
