Production designer Jim Bissell explains his unique solution for generating gravity aboard ship.
We at Collider are pleased to exclusively share a behind-the-scenes look at the production design for the Netflix original sci-fi film. The midnight sky. In developing this adaptation of the Lily brooks-dalton novel Good morning midnight, director George Clooney I wanted the scenes set in space to reflect the potential reality of space travel rather than inventing a spaceship that didn’t make much practical sense.
The story of The midnight sky it is counted in two parts. On Earth, Clooney plays a dying scientist struggling to get to a radio station where he can warn a colonial ship returning to Earth to turn around. You see, a cataclysmic event is about to make Earth uninhabitable, and the only hope for humanity to continue is for those on the ship to colonize a new planet.
So, the space scenes take place entirely in a spaceship, the design of which was built by the production designer. Jim Bissell. “The biggest challenge,” explains Bissell in the exclusive article, “came at the beginning when George said, ‘I want a design that explores a possible solution to the problem of growing food, generating oxygen, nearby living arrangements and how they affect the psychology of the people who live in them and coexist with each other in a long-term space flight. ‘
The main problem to be solved was the generation of gravity on board the ship, which is usually portrayed in the cinema by means of a circular design. But for The midnight sky, they were with a rod design that rotates in space, generating its own gravitational force.

Reports suggest that Lucasfilm has been looking for a reason to fire the actress for months.
